Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans).
Native to Mexico and Guatemala, this fast growing subtropical sage offers sweet citrusy-pineapple leaves which can be used to flavor meat or be prepared as tea.
Expect a vigorous upright shrub covered in tender pubescent leaves which reaches 4-5ft. height. Hummingbirds love the red flowers which come on non-stop most of the year.
Give regular water in a container setting or let naturalize in the garden where it can grow a big root system and become independent of water in a few months. Prune back to keep at any desired size.
